At Potrero Kids at Daniel Webster Preschool, we are committed to serving all members of our community.

Eligibility

Children must be at least thirty-three months old (2 years, 9 months) and not yet enrolled in kindergarten. Priority for admission will be given to children of families who reside or work in the Potrero Hill neighborhood of San Francisco or whose siblings attend PKDW or Daniel Webster Elementary School. Families receiving tuition subsidies must meet the eligibility criteria of the funding source for subsidy and no priority will be given based on neighborhood of residence. Families shall be enrolled regardless of race, creed, color, sex, disability, sexual orientation, national origin or immigration status. 
 

Admission Procedures

 

Preliminary application

A non-refundable, non-transferable registration fee of $50 is due with completion of the initial PKDW application form. Applications are accepted in advance for future enrollments with a rolling admission throughout the year. Families will be notified of receipt of their applications and their placement on the wait list. There is no fee for qualified low-income applicants. Low-income status will be ascertained through a screening procedure and families will be entered into the San Francisco Centralized Eligibility List or SFCEL. 
 
Open houses are held in the fall and winter preceding fall admission – all are welcome to attend. Applications are accepted once the child has reached 12 months of age. This will place the child in the waitpool for fall admission in the year they turn 3. Your child’s third birthday must be December 2nd or earlier for fall admission. Families from the waitpool will be invited to participate in the process outlined below in the early months preceding their fall admission.
 

Phase 1: Group Interview

We invite families who have applied by December 31st to participate in group interviews (children play with their peers and PKDW teachers, while parents speak with directors). These are scheduled for late January/early February. Due to demand, typically all families will have a priority factor such as living or working within the Potrero Hill neighborhood or having a sibling enrolled at PKDW or DW. Families are invited to interview in groups of about six. We strive to maintain our age and gender balances so we look for a mix of boys and girls across a range of ages to fill the available part-time (3-day) and full-time slots.

 

Phase 2: Invitational tours

We invite families back in groups of 3-4 families for an optional PKDW tour during the school day. These will be scheduled throughout February at 9:15 am. You will receive an email invitation to schedule your tour.

 

Phase 3: Offer letters

Offer letters are sent via email in early March. Spots are accepted by placing a deposit (see below) and returning the initial paperwork within a week. Remaining spots will be filled by families that participated in Phase 1.

 
The majority of students are enrolled in the fall. If a space becomes available during the school year, we will fill it with a child who participated in the admissions process or one who has come of age (2 years, 9 months) in the interim. Candidates for admission off-cycle will participate in an interview and assessment. 
 

Acceptance and deposit

Once notified of acceptance, families must provide a non-refundable $500 deposit ($350 towards tuition and $150 towards our activity fee) and return the initial paperwork with a week to secure the child’s spot. If the child is not enrolled, the deposit is not refundable.

Alternately, forms can be returned in person to the administrative office at PKDW. Application fees are non-refundable. Parents may also request application materials by mail or download application from this web page (see right or left navigation for download).

 

Parents shall be notified of the status of their application within 10 business days after receipt by PKDW.
